California Independent Contractor vs. Employee Assessment

This assessment is designed for California workers, hiring businesses, studios, professional practices, creative companies, and other organizations evaluating whether a service relationship may be treated as employment or independent contracting.

California law reviewed August 10, 2026. California generally presumes a paid worker is an employee unless the hiring entity proves the ABC test or a valid statutory exception or special rule applies. Federal wage-and-hour and tax tests are separate. This assessment is educational only and does not determine legal status.
This assessment provides educational information only, does not provide legal advice, and does not create an attorney-client relationship.
